About

Rights and reuse

The project has three layers with different rights. Here is what you may take, and on what terms.

The project's texts, translations and data

Essays, place descriptions, annotations to archive items, the four translations and the structured data are published under CC BY-SA 4.0: you may copy, translate and adapt them, including commercially, provided you credit the project and share derivatives under the same licence.

Photographs, documents and recordings

Media files do not belong to the project. Each one carries its rights holder, licence and credit, and those terms apply. A download button appears only where the licence allows it; its absence means the file may not be taken from the site.

Oral histories

Interviews are published only with the speaker's consent and within its stated scope. Reusing a recording, transcript or translation needs the speaker's or the family's permission. Consent may be withdrawn at any time.

Map data

The basemap and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0). Holiday dates are computed from Hebcal for Baku.

Source code

The site's code is distributed under the MIT licence.

Privacy

The site uses no cookies, visit counters or third-party trackers, and stores no data about visitors. Fonts and photographs are served from the site itself. The “Suggest” form sends nothing to a server: it prepares an e-mail that you send yourself, from your own mailbox. Like any web server, the site’s host keeps technical request logs (IP address, time, page address) to run the site and protect it from abuse.

Open data

The archive catalogue, places and sources can be downloaded as JSON and CSV, with the fields documented.

If we got something wrong

Write through the “Suggest” form: name the item and the error. A disputed item is unpublished while we check it.
